Homeschool Masonry and Concrete Workshop Fall 2024
Description: This was an engaging, hands-on Masonry and Carpentry Workshop for homeschool students. In this workshop, students learned the fundamentals of these two trades safety through interactive projects. Guided by skilled instructors from ABC Block & Brick, CB Masonry, and Bass Commercial Concrete, students gained valuable craftsmanship skills, creativity, and confidence as they explored these areas of the construction industry.

Youth Welding Workshop

Description: This workshop provided students with a comprehensive introduction to the basics of welding. It began with an overview of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensuring that students understood the importance of safety gear. The primary welding process taught was Stick (SMAW). Students started by running beads on flat positions. This practice included mastering rod angles, arc voltages, welding speed, and bead overlapping. Additionally, students learned how to operate a welding machine, including proper setup and shutdown procedures. At the end of the workshop, they were able to keep the work plates they created and received a certificate of completion.
Riggs CAT Facility Tour

Description: Since 1927, Riggs Cat has served the state of Arkansas as the Caterpillar Equipment and Service provider. Students met at the official Riggs CAT facility in Little Rock for a full-service tour of all their heavy equipment and machines used in the construction industry. In addition to the tour, there were hands-on activities with experts from their Pro’s shop. Plus, everyone got free snowcones!
Youth Construction Camp

Description: This camp wasdesigned to introduce students ages 12 - 16 to a variety of construction trades through hands on learning. Under the guidance of team members from local contractors and suppliers, students got to participate in different activities and demonstrations, each focused on a different trade. They also took part in a team building carpentry project and large PVC pipe and board bridge building activity! Plus, learned about career paths in this industry. This camp was hosted in conjunction with ABC and the National Association of Women in Construction.

Under the guidance of team members from Mulhearn-Wilson Constructors, a general contractor that serves the state of Arkansas, students learned and implemented key carpentry concepts by building bird houses in small groups. They will also got to see various demonstrations and learn about career opportunities in this industry.

They got to take part in a team building carpentry project where the end products were donated to Habitat for Humanity! Plus they will got to learn about career paths in this industry.
Adult First Aid / CPR / AED Course (for teens and parents) Summer 2023

Description: Could you save a life? Are you prepared if an emergency happens in our day to day life? What if a family member needs immediate attention and seconds matter? By participating in this course through the American Heart Association, students learned how to provide adult first aid, CPR, and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. This wasa great safety opportunity for a parent and teen to do together! Upon successful completion of the course, including the required skills demonstrations, students received a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED certification card, valid for two years.

Students had the opportunity to help build a mock wall, install a storefront window frame, and properly waterproof the finished product. All activities were facilitated by expert team members from Platinum Drywall and ACE Glass Construction Corp. Students also got to see various demonstrations and learn about career opportunities in this industry.

Spring Homeschool Fire Detection & Suppression Systems Workshop 2023

Description: We’ve all been through a fire drill and have been taught what to do if a fire occurs. But have you ever thought about what’s involved with installing fire alarms, sprinklers, and other lifesaving systems in buildings and homes? Installing these systems is part of an essential construction trade, one that saves many lives. This workshop was designed to introduce homeschool students to the basics of hands on learning that is associated with installing fire detection and suppression systems in construction. Utilizing a blend of electrical and plumbing principles, students were guided through various activities by team members from VSC Fire & Security, a local contractor specializing in fire safety and security. Students experienced a fire simulator and learned how to properly use an extinguisher; build and install a sprinkler system; build and connect a fire alarm system; and finally, learn how to properly test and inspect that system. Plus they watched a live burn demo on site!

Description: This workshop was designed to introduce homeschool students to the basics of hands-on learning that is associated with the plumbing and HVAC construction trades. We had a morning session for students ages 8-12 and an afternoon session for students ages 13-18. We kicked things off by giving everyone their own set of safety goggles and work gloves. Students were then guided through various activities by team members from Action Mechanical to learn about the plumbing trade and Powers of Arkansas to learn about the HVAC trade. Students also got to learn about career opportunities in these industries.

Description: This camp was designed to introduce students ages 12 - 16 to a variety of construction trades through hands on learning. They also got to take part in a team building carpentry project and popsicle stick bridge building project. This was a great opportunity for students to work with experts from the field while taking a fun approach to learning new skills. Description: This workshop was designed to introduce students to the basics of hands on learning that is associated with installing fire detection and suppression systems in construction. The event kicked off with North Little Rock Fire Department doing a burn trailer demo where students got to see the differences in how a fire spreads in a room with sprinklers vs without. Then, utilizing a blend of electrical and plumbing principles, students were guided through various activities by team members from VSC Fire & Security, a local contractor specializing in life saving systems. Students learned how to properly use a fire extinguisher and got to put out a real fire (controlled of course). They learned about the components of a sprinkler system and installed part of it. They also assembled and connected a fire alarm system. Finally, they learned how to properly test and inspect that system.

Summer Vehicle Maintenance 101 Workshop 2022

Description: The first hour of this workshop was designed to teach teens ages 14 - 18 the basics of routine vehicle maintenance through various demonstrations and hands on practice. Our facilitators taught students what they needed to know about proper auto care in order to keep their vehicles running smoothly and safely! The learning objectives from this workshop included: Overall Vehicle Safety, Understanding & Finding Your VIN #, Changing a Flat Tire; Checking Oil; Checking Fluids; Checking Battery; and Proper Jump Starting Procedures. During the last hour of the workshop, ABC’s Safety Committee Chairman gave his ‘5 Keys to Safe Driving’ presentation where he reviewed the core principles of Smith System, a leader in crash-avoidance training.

Students also got to see various demonstrations and learn about career opportunities in these industries.
